401ks Buying And Selling Stocks

401(k)s can be described as employer-sponsored retirement plans that allow an employee to save money for his retirement. 401(k) plans have got their name from the section number and paragraph in the U.S. Internal Revenue Code and are one of the most popular retirement plans.

While participating in a 401(k) plan, the employee is required to make monthly contributions. These monthly contributions are a percentage of the employee salary. According to IRS, you can contribute up to $15,000 per year towards the plan. In certain companies, even the employer makes an equal contribution towards an employee’s 401(k) plan. This money is then invested in mutual funds, stocks, money market accounts and bonds. These investments are made as per the guidelines stipulated by the employee.

There are several advantages of investing in a 401(k) plan. Contributions made towards the plan are deducted from an employee’s salary even before federal tax is calculated. Hence, employees have the advantage of making pre-tax saving. 401(k) plans provide an employee with the opportunity to defer his or her tax payments on earnings made on 401(k)s investments until retirement. This way, people can save hundreds of dollars as several states do not collect income tax for retirees. Even if a state collects, retirees are placed in a lower tax bracket. However, there are several factors that need to be taken into account while buying or selling stocks in a 401(k) plan.

One should know the right time to trade stocks. This can be done only when one is able to study the market carefully rather than believing in plan administrators.

In a 401(k) plan, the biggest mistake that often people make is to buy large amount of stocks of the company they are working for. Ironically, even the company management encourages such practices. This strategy can backfire if the company goes bankrupt or the stock value decreases tremendously. The best strategy is to diversify. To be on the safe side just 10 percent of your investment money should be invested in your own company’s stocks.
